Language decision - multiple features

Some friends and I are starting a hobby - gamedev project. Mostly for fun and programming together (again). Since none of us come from a gamedev background, we are trying to decide on some basic stuff first. What popped up is:

We need the following features as a (bare) minimum: OpenGL, Multiplayer Support, modding support. It would be a big plus, to start with cross platform support in mind (so windows then Linux and maybe MacOS).

It won't be a super complicated game (graphic wise) but decent FPS will be necessary. Should we go for Java/C++/C#? Since we are mostly coming from a C++ background, we always fear to lose out to much on the speed side when going for something like Java. But mod support would probably be way easier than with C++ (we don't want to go the Lua/scripting route). Any experience/ inputs on that decision are highly appreciated!!
