We should have a serious discussion on common sense truck control

I mean, these are “common sense” reforms that all Americans should be able to agree to.

  1. From now on, you must be 21 in order to get your drivers license.
  2. Drivers licenses will only be valid in the state in which you reside. It will be up to other states to decide if they will accept your drivers license, and allow you to drive.
  3. Universal background checks on all drivers license applications, and you cannot get a license if you happen to land on the no fly list.
  4. A 3-day waiting period on any SUV, pickup, van, or truck after purchase. A standard 1-day waiting period for all other vehicles.
  5. A complete ban on assault trucks. An assault truck is defined as any vehicle having 2 or more of the following: a) more than 2 axels, b) a chassis weighing over 700 pounds, c) 2 or more mufflers or exhaust pipes, d) a military or train horn.
  6. A ban on any modifications or devices that may, in any way, increase the speed or acceleration of the vehicle.
  7. High speed vehicle ban. Devices must be installed on all vehicles limiting their top speed to 45 miles per hour. Any vehicle that can exceed 45 mph will be confiscated.
  8. Local statutes. Allow localities such as cities to enforce the high speed vehicle ban at even lower speeds if required. For instance, Chicago can set a limit of 25 mph through all city limits, and therefore all vehicles sold and/or driven in Chicago must have limitor devices installed that restrict top speed to 25 miles per hour.
  9. Finally, the most important new law, will be the “May issue Permit to obtain drivers license.” States may require all people who wish to obtain a drivers license to show “good and necessary cause” as a reason to obtain a license. It is at the discretion of the state to decide what “good and necessary cause” is required to obtain a drivers license. The state may deny any license application for any reason.

Enacting these laws will make the United States a much safer place. These common sense reforms should be easy to implement given there is no constitutional barrier to limiting driving privileges.
